Introduction

Frenchies are short sturdy dogs with out-sized bat like ears, flat faces and noses similar to that of a Pug. They make great companions and are renowned for their affectionate nature and playfulness. They have a tendency to bark less than other small breeds, but are still lively and alert. They are often called the 'clown' of dog breeds by their owners because of their hilarious child-like antics and curious nature.

History

The French Bulldog originated in France. Migrating Lace workers from areas around Nottingham in England brought bulldogs with them which were mixed with local rat terriers. This small cute bulldog type dog mix soon became popular with locals and a new breed was born.

Temperament

Frenchies love to be at the center of attention, and love to have fun, although they can sometimes be demanding. Their curious nature makes them a pleasure to watch. They are affectionate yet courageous, and always loyal to their owner - though at times mischievous. They do well in a good home.

Coat

French Bulldogs sport a short, shiny, smooth coat. They have loose, wrinkled skin at the head and shoulders.all colors are acceptable except solid black, liver, mouse and black with white or tan.

Do Frenchys do well in Apartments?

Frenchies adapt well to apartment life and positively flourish it their masters provide them with enough attention. If supplied with plenty of playthings, they can be fairly active indoors and don't really need a yard.

Barking

They are moderate barkers, and only tend to get noisy when excited. It's always a good idea to see the sire and dam before purchasing a puppy, as they are likely to inherit traits from their parents.

Do Frenchys Get Along With Children & Other Pets?

Kids and French Bulldogs get along very well. They are very playful and not large enough to hurt a toddler with over-exuberance. From personal experience they also seem to do well with cats and other pets.

Exercising a French Bulldog

Playing with them indoors and taking them on short walks should provide the Frenchy with all the exercise it needs. They don't do well at high temperatures, so don't walk them on hot days.

How to Groom a French Bulldog

French Bulldogs can be groomed easily as they have a short coat. Weekly is probably enough, but if your a clean freak it can be done daily. Bathe only if needed.

Frenchy and Shedding

Shedding is low to medium and can vary among individuals. However, the hair is short and and won't be as messy as a long haired dog.

Frenchy Health Problems?

Like their closely related cousins the English Bulldog they suffer from Brachycephalic syndrome, which can especially lead to suffering if exercised when the temperature is high.
Other common disorders include back and spinal disorders.
Eye issues can also be a problem - such as Glaucoma, retinal fold dysplasia, corneal ulcers and juvenile cataracts.

Are Frenchys Intelligent?

French Bulldogs are usually regarded as medium intelligent dogs, when it comes to learning they can be easily distracted.

French Bulldogs are known to be stubborn when it comes to training - they would rather full around. Owner need to be firm, persistent and not allow these fun loving dogs to sidetrack them.
Some advise training them in small areas where they are not easily distracted, and whenever possible making the training session appear more like a game.
