Introduction

The Bulldog is a popular family pet, renowned by its owners for its loving and kind nature. It's a dog you either love or hate, one person may see them as handsome, dignified creatures, another may see them as ugly and comical. One thing for sure is that they really get along with children of all ages, and if kept in a good home their affectionate nature will win you over.

History

The history of the Bulldog is still shrouded in some mystery., although we do know its ancestors were around in certain areas of England in the early 17th century. Originally this muscular breed was developed for bull-baitng. However, the modern day descendants would not do very well in this "sport" - their aggressive tendencies have been bred out of them, and though they still have an imposing body they do not have the stamina to bring down a bull.

Temperament

Extremely loyal and affection. Their docile nature makes them almost perfect for any type of family. Their one negative trait is their stubbornness, but provided the dog's owner is willing to put in the effort to train the dog that van be overcome.

Coat

This breed sports a coat short, smooth coat with a fine texture of uniform color or with a black mask or muzzle; reds, red brindle, piebald. The AKC doesn't like black.

Do Bulldogs do well in Apartments?

Bulldogs do pretty well in apartments - but have a tendency to chew anything they can get their jaws around. They really don't need a lot of space to be happy. Just remember to take them on walks when the weather isn't too hot.

The Bulldog is renowned for being extremely tolerant and good around children of all ages. However, because they are such heavy dogs, it's never a good idea to leave toddlers and Bulldogs together unsupervised. They can become very protective over family and children which means you need to keep an eye on things when other people are about.

Exercising a English Bulldog

Care has to be taken when exercising these dogs. They are brachycephalic, and have a problem regulating internal boy temperature. To prevent them from overheating avoid exerting them on hot days. They don't make good jogging partners, but need to be walked at least a few times a week.

How to Groom a English Bulldog

Brushing your bulldog once a week is usually enough. You need to pay attention to the folded skin on the dog face, and clean them off with a damp cloth to prevent dirt and moisture from collecting in the wrinkles.

Bulldog and Shedding

Main shedding usually occurs in the spring and fall, although they will shed slightly all year around . However they are not considered to be heavy shedders, and their shorts coats do not lead to much of a mess.

Bulldog Health Problems?

Bulldogs have very small nasal cavities, which makes it difficult to keep their their bodies cool, which in turn makes them very sensitive to heat. They are also susceptible to eye problems such a cherry eye and cataracts. Some suffer from cardiac issues. Others may be prone to cysts between their toes.

English Bulldogs are of medium intelligence, but can be very capable when well trained.
