Introduction
APBTs have seen success as companion dogs, and police dogs. Unfortunately , Pit Bull Terriers have also been used in illegal dog fighting operations - which has somewhat tainted their character in the eyes of some. Despite some of these negative impressions - most owners will tell you that a well-bred American Pit Bull Terrier is a faithful, good-natured companion.
History
The Pit Bull Terrier is a UKC recognized breed that originated in the UK by cross breeding older lines of English Terrier and Bulldogs. Once in the new world they were further developed into what is known as the American Pit Bull Terrier. They are very closely related to the American Staffordshire Terrier (AKC) which came from the same lineage.
Temperament
The breed is regarded as an strong and confident dog always willing to please its owner. They are usually amiable toward people - even strangers. The UKC specifies that aggressiveness is an undesired trait in this breed.

Coat
The coat is short glossy and smooth (never wavy or curly), and moderately soft. APBTs come in a large variety of solid and mottled colors. Merle is th only color that is specified as a disqualification by the UKC.
Do Pit Bull Terriers do well in Apartments?
Pitbulls can do quite well in apartments if not left along for long periods and given adequate exercise. Left alone they can develop bad habits like chewing furniture and other household items. Unfortunately for some would-be APBT owners some apartments do have breed and size restrictions - so be sure to check out your buildings regulations before adopting a pitbull.
Barking
Pitbulls may bark at other dogs but otherwise it is usually an expression of boredom. As with most behavioral issues, problems can be prevented by proper socialization and training when the dogs are in their puppy and adolescent stages.
Do Pit Bull Terriers Get Along With Children & Other Pets?
If trained properly pitbulls get along well with pets and children. Owners say that they make excellent family companions and have noted for their love of children. As with any breed, they should not be left alone with unfamiliar children.
Exercising a American Pit Bull Terrier
An hour or two of walking time is required for these dogs, along with a good romp at the local dog park once a week.

Brushing once a week is all that is required to keep their coats in shiny and healthy condition.

Their short coats make them fairly low maintenance dogs. Though they will shed more with the onset of summer and winter.
